I don't even look at CTR any longer. I only care about CTOR. Why? Because I know that these are real people who opened and clicked. It's less likely this is going to be a bot and it's a better measurement of your email engagement.
Defining CTOR
Click to Open Rate (CTOR) measures the percentage of unique clicks on a link within an email compared to the number of recipients who opened that email. Simply put, CTOR tells marketers how compelling their content is for the readers who have already shown interest by opening the email.
To calculate CTOR, use the following formula:
```
CTOR = (Unique Clicks / Unique Opens) x 100
```
For example, if 200 people opened your email and 50 clicked on a link, your CTOR would be 25%. This metric helps assess the effectiveness of your email's content and its call-to-action, guiding strategies to enhance engagement.
Why is it Important?
Relevance of Content: A higher CTOR implies that your audience finds your email valuable. For instance, a CTOR of 30% is generally seen as good, while below 10% may indicate a need for improvement in the content offered.
Audience Segmentation: Marketers can analyze CTOR across different audience groups. For instance, if you observe a CTOR of 40% among your best customers but only 15% among new subscribers, you can tailor future campaigns to cater to these specific segments.
Factors Influencing Click to Open Rate
Attractive Subject Lines: Your subject line sets the tone. Avoid generic phrases; aim for clarity and intrigue.
Email Design and Layout: A well-organized email layout can keep readers engaged. Emails with a clear structure, such as headers, bullet points, and visuals, can improve readability, leading to higher CTOR.
Effective Call-to-Action: A clear, persuasive CTA guides recipients on what to do next. The more explicit and enticing your CTA is, the better your chances of increasing clicks.
